Taste of makyong
By Dennis Chua

AWARD-WINNING actresses Datin Sofia Jane Hisham and Vanidah Imran had fun co-starring in the well-received play series Seks, Rumah Tangga Dan Pembunuhan directed by Nam Ron earlier this month. The four-day performance is directed by Fatimah Abdullah.

They will be teaming up again in Makyong Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang, as siblings Puteri Sulung and Puteri Bongsu. Makyong is a Unesco-recognised cultural heritage from Kelantan.

Their leading man is none other than makyong exponent Rosnan Rahman, who plays the protagonist Raja Gondang.

Rosnan recently staged Makyong Raja Besar Ho Gading at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC, in conjunction with the DFP Seni Festival 2013 in September.

Sofia and Vanidah thanked Istana Budaya and its director-general Datuk Juhari Shaarani for giving them a chance to try something new.

Sofia says: “We both love challenges because it’s by breaking out of our comfort zones that we can grow in our careers.”

Vanidah says: “Makyong is a national heritage and so, it is our responsibility to promote it especially among the younger generation.”

Sofia is delighted to star in her first makyong role, largely because her husband comes from Kelantan.

“It’s a great challenge for us because it’s not easy to speak Kelate (Kelantanese dialect), which is like a language of its own. In fact, it’s like English-speakers learning French,” says Sofia who describes their preparations for the show as a “combination of Fear Factor and The Amazing Race”.

They have been rehearsing 12 hours daily for three weeks and mastering the dance moves is their priority.

“I have to sing too,” says Vanidah.

A big surprise for Sofia and Vanidah is that the script has been improvised. “In makyong, improvisation is very important as daily performance dialogues differ,” says Sofia.

Vanidah says: “Thank goodness we have a great teacher in Rosnan, who always gives us tips and reminds us to stay alert.”

Ad-libbing, she says, makes makyong exciting.

Sofia and Vanidah practised speaking Kelate with Fatimah and cast members Asrulfaizal Kamaruzaman and Kamarulzaman Taib, who are all from Kelantan.

The duo are fans of Asrulfaizal’s performance as a “bad boy” in Budak Kelantan and Kamarulzaman’s portrayal of first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra in 1957 — Hati Malaya and Tanda Putera.

“It’s an honour to work with Asrulfaizal and Che Kem (Kamarulzaman). They are natural on stage,” says Sofia, who describes her co-stars as helpful and dedicated to their craft.

“Furthermore, Rosnan and Fatimah are our old friends and it’s fun working with them, too,” says Vanidah who was acquainted with makyong when she saw the late Khadijah Awang’s performances about three decades ago.
“It was wonderful watching it for the first time. I thought I’d love to perform it one day, and now’s the time,” she adds.

Starring in the bangsawan play Tun Perak in Istana Budaya in the late 1990s has helped Vanidah prepare for this.

“Tun Perak was a good training ground but makyong is very different from bangsawan in that it has distinct moves and speech styles,” she says. “Furthermore, the protagonist prince’s assistants or peran are the real stars, adding colour and humour to the show.”

In preparing for her “ultimate makyong experience”, Vanidah watched Raja Besar Ho Gading, Budak Kelantan and award-winning film Bunohan, to grasp her command of Kelate.

“The preparations are tiresome but enjoyable because learning new stuff is a ‘bonus’ which adds to our talents,” says Sofia. “We’d love to star in more makyong plays in the future.”

She describes her character, Puteri Sulung, as a caring elder sister to Vanidah’s Puteri Bongsu. They are two of seven princesses of the kingdom Hampa Beranyut, ruled by Raja Besar.

“Puteri Bongsu falls in love with Raja Gondang, a traveller,” says Vanidah. “Rosnan plays my love interest, who is eager to explore the world outside his kingdom.”

Raja Gondang plants a selasih tree in his family garden and tells his mother, Puteri Gak Petera, that if the tree does not wilt, he is doing well.

Sofia, whose best-known play is Erma Fatima’s Natrah in Istana Budaya three years ago, constantly looks out for plays with engaging scripts. She loves to portray women who are strong yet vulnerable.

Her next film at year’s end is Hanyut, directed by U-Wei Saari, who also directed her in the award-winning Perempuan, Isteri Dan ... in the 1990s. It is based on Joseph Conrad’s novel Almayer’s Folly and also stars Diana Danielle and Adi Putra.

Vanidah, who last appeared in the film Untuk Tiga Hari with her husband Rashidi Ishak and award-winning actor Afdlin Shauki, is best known for the plays Keris Sang Puteri (1999), Tun Perak (2000), Wangi Jadi Saksi (2006) and Cuci The Musical (2011).

Her much-awaited new movie at year’s end is Papadom 2, in which she reprises her role as a lecturer who becomes best friend with the protagonist, restaurant owner and over-protective single father Saadom, played by Afdlin. She was recently in Liga Lawak Super on TV3 as a judge.

Meanwhile, Fatimah says makyong has gone through a lot of improvement, in terms of casting, lighting, costumes and production values in the last three decades.

“Having makyong staged in the national theatre is the best way to keep this art form alive,” she says.

Rosnan commends Sofia and Vanidah as true professionals who are passionate about the arts.

“They’re just the ‘princesses’ we were looking for, and their dedication is amazing. I’m optimistic that it’ll be a great show and fans will have a fantastic time,” he says.

The play also stars Sabri Yunus, Isey Fazlisham (Sabri’s protege in Bintang Mencari Bintang), Ismadian, Che Kem, Romli, Asrulfaizal and the Istana Budaya artistes.

One happy family

ROSNAN Rahman was the head of Istana Budaya’s makyong production team, which he formed and led for 10 years, before taking on a job at the National Department For Culture And Arts in 2011.

“I’m thankful to be offered this role in Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang. Even though I’m no longer under Abang Jo’s (Datuk Juhari Shaarani) care, I still feel like I’m part of the family,” he says.

He is glad that makyong is getting more exposure today. Even though it is publicised more in Kuala Lumpur, he hopes it will get equal attention in Kelantan where it originated.

For Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang, Rosnan is anxious about his “flying” scene. Prior to this, there have been no flying scenes in any makyong performance.

“I’ve never done a flying scene before! On top of that, I have to recite my lines, too!” he says.

Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang will use high tech special effects for the stage, lighting and graphics.

“We want the audience to be able to differentiate between a makyong show and a conventional theatre production. We hope to retain the authenticity of makyong in this show,” says Rosnan.

One for the arts

Meanwhile, it has been a challenge for Fatimah to direct Vanidah, who has no experience in makyong. “She’s from Penang, so I had to teach her in detail how to perfect the dialect. She’s been working hard and is doing great,” says Fatimah.

She assures that the dialect and accent used in Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang aren’t as deep and heavy as normal. “We will make sure the audience will be able to understand the story.”
She says that English subtitles will be provided for the show.

Kesaktian Anak Raja Gondang is Fatimah’s biggest directorial work to date. “I’ve never felt so blessed and thankful for such an opportunity. This may also be the last time I direct a makyong production.”

She has been participating in makyong shows since she was 10 so she thinks it’s time that she steps aside for the younger generation to take over. Bibi Nurshuhada Ramli
